Myopia: How to treat it?

Myopia is a visual disorder in which distant objects appear blurry, while near objects are seen clearly. Myopia occurs when the image of a distant object is formed in front of the retina instead of on it, because the eye is too long or the cornea is too curved. This makes distant objects appear blurry.

Myopia occurs when the image of an object is focused on the front of the eye instead of on the retina, causing blurry vision for distant objects. This usually happens because the eye is too long or the cornea is too curved, which alters the eye's ability to focus light correctly.

It is difficult to determine an exact figure for the number of people with myopia in the world, as it depends on various factors such as total population, age, geography, and lifestyle habits. However, it is estimated that one-third of the world's population is myopic. Furthermore, the prevalence of myopia is expected to increase globally, especially in Asia, where it is estimated that 80% of young people will suffer from this disorder in the future. Its causes are due to a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors, such as lack of outdoor time and excessive use of electronic devices.

This anomaly can be treated by placing divergent lenses, either in the form of glasses or contact lenses, refractive surgery, visual therapy exercises, or with the dietary intake of nutrients that can favor visual performance in low light and against glare.

- Vitamin A: helps maintain retinal health, prevent vision degeneration, and keep the ocular mucosa healthy.

- Vitamin C: helps protect the eyes from damage caused by free radicals and improves retinal function.

- Vitamin E: also protects the eyes from damage caused by free radicals.

- Folic acid: plays an important role in the production of neurotransmitters that help regulate eye movement.

- Zinc: is essential for retinal function and protein in the cornea.

- Omega-3 fatty acids: Helps maintain retinal health and prevent vision degeneration.

These nutrients can be found in foods such as fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts, whole grains, and dairy products. It is important to eat a balanced and varied diet to obtain the necessary amount of these nutrients, and they can also be acquired through the intake of food supplements.
